Does TripWorks accept virtual cards (VCC), WEX, or VPAY?

Whether TripWorks accepts virtual credit cards (VCCs) like WEX, and what to know about VPAY, for resellers or guests paying with a virtual card number.

A virtual card, or VCC (virtual card number), is a card number generated for a single purchase or a single reseller relationship instead of printed on physical plastic. Resellers and OTAs commonly pay this way, generating a new virtual card for each booking rather than sharing one card on file.

Short answer

TripWorks doesn't check or restrict card numbers by brand, issuer, or whether a card is virtual or physical. A virtual card is entered and charged exactly like any other card, whether that's a guest paying at checkout or a reseller's card saved on their profile. If a virtual card is issued on a network TripWorks already accepts, it works the same as a physical card on that network.

That means it comes down to which network the virtual card rides on:

  • A virtual card issued on Visa or Mastercard (this covers most VCC providers, including WEX-issued virtual cards on the Mastercard network) works the same as any other Visa or Mastercard, since accepting a network covers every card issued on it, not just specific issuers.
  • VPAY is a separate Visa debit card brand used mainly in parts of Europe. It is not one of the card brands our payment processing supports today. A VPAY card will not process successfully.

Where this comes up

  • Reseller cards on file. See Saving and processing a reseller's credit card for how to save and charge a reseller's card, virtual or physical, the same way.
  • Guest checkout. A guest entering a virtual card number at checkout is treated the same as any other card entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reseller pay with a different virtual card for every booking?

Yes. You can enter a new card at the time of each booking instead of saving one on the reseller's profile, which fits a reseller that issues a new virtual card per booking.

Does TripWorks support WEX cards?

A WEX-issued virtual card is typically issued on the Mastercard network, and TripWorks doesn't restrict by issuer, only by network. A WEX virtual card on Mastercard works the same as any other Mastercard.

Does TripWorks support VPAY?

No. VPAY is a separate Visa debit brand that isn't one of the card brands our payment processing supports. A VPAY card won't process successfully, regardless of whether it's virtual or physical.

Is a virtual card treated any differently than a physical card?

No. TripWorks doesn't distinguish between a virtual and a physical card. Both are entered and charged the same way; what matters is the card's network (Visa, Mastercard, and so on), not whether it's virtual.
