What sets the default country code on the checkout phone field

The phone field at online checkout defaults to your account's own country setting, not the guest's browser or location. Here's how it works.

When a guest reaches the phone field at checkout, it starts pre-set to a specific country's dialing code (for example, +1 for the US). That default isn't guessed from the guest's location or browser. It comes from your account's own country setting.

How the default is set

The phone field's default country comes directly from the country your account was set up with when it was created (US by default, unless a different country was chosen at signup). Every guest at checkout sees the same default, based on your account, regardless of where they're actually browsing from.

This is different from the checkout page's display language, which can adjust to the guest's browser settings. The phone field's default country code and the page's language are two separate things that happen to sit near each other in the checkout flow.

Changing it

There's no setting in TripWorks where you can change your account's country yourself. If your account's country is wrong, or you've moved and need it updated, contact TripWorks support and we'll update it for you.

Changing this affects the phone field's default going forward. Guests can still select a different country in the phone field themselves; the account country only controls what's pre-selected before they touch it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the phone field always default to the wrong country for my guests?

The default comes from your account's own country setting, not each guest's actual location. If most of your guests are calling in from a different country than your account is set to, the default will look wrong for them even though nothing is broken. Guests can still change it themselves in the field.

Can I set the default country code myself?

No. There's no self-service setting for this. Contact TripWorks support to have your account's country updated.

Does the guest's browser or location affect the phone field's default?

No. The phone field's default country is fixed to your account's own setting for every guest. The checkout page's display language is the part that can adjust to a guest's browser, not the phone field.

What happens if a guest picks a different country in the phone field?

Nothing changes on your account. The default is just a starting point. A guest can select any country's dialing code before entering their number, and that choice only applies to their own entry.
